Rick Baerends is een derdejaarsstudent Communicatie en heeft een bijbaan als communicatiemedewerker bij de HZ via The Work Zone. Deze bijbaan sluit heel goed aan op Rick’s studie. Wij hebben hem wat vragen gesteld over zijn werk. Lees je mee?

Sinds begin maart ben jij begonnen met het werken als communicatiemedewerker bij de HZ. Hoe bevalt jou deze functie?

Het bevalt mij erg goed, ik heb erg veel vrijheid. Niet alleen qua wanneer ik werk maar ook veel creatieve vrijheid.

Welke werkzaamheden voor jij zoal uit?

Het grootste deel van het werk is website design, maar ook het schrijven/onderhouden van de nieuwsbrief. Het is vooral schrijven maar je krijgt wel de vrijheid om te bedenken wat jij op de website zou willen zien.

Hoe ziet een werkdag er voor jou uit?

Meestal werk ik een paar uur in de avond. Ik zei eerder dat je veel vrijheid krijgt met wanneer je werkt, daar moet je wel tegen kunnen. Met twee avonden doordeweeks heb ik de meeste uren al gehaald, zo heb ik toch een vrij weekend.

Hoe ben jij bij deze bijbaan terecht gekomen?

Het is erg simpel, The Work Zone stuurt vaker een mail naar een hele opleiding met een vacature die bij jouw opleiding past. Verder hoefde ik alleen een mailtje terug te sturen.

Kan je het werken goed combineren met jouw studie Communicatie?

Ja hoor erg makkelijk. Ik werk 8 uur in de week dus door in de avonden te werken dan kom je al een heel eind.

Zijn er dingen die jij met deze bijbaan leert, waar jij profijt van hebt voor jouw studie?

Schrijven vind ik leuk om te doen, dat deed ik ook al veel bij mijn stage. Nu kan ik daar nog meer mee oefenen. Verder is ook website design een aspect wat vaak terug komt bij communicatie. Dus veel ervan komt ook later nog terug.

Via The Work Zone werk jij voor de HZ. Hoe heb jij dit proces ervaren?

Makkelijk, normaal als je ergens solliciteert zit er een flink proces achter. Nu hoefde ik alleen een mail terug te sturen en wat gegevens te delen. Het grootste deel wordt voor jou gedaan.

Zou je deze bijbaan als communicatiemedewerker aanbevelen aan jouw studiegenoten?

Tuurlijk! Het is een opleiding gerichte baan waar je niet alleen al bezig bent met de praktijk maar ook staat het mooi op je cv voor later.

Rick Baerends is a third year student Communication and has a side job working as a Communications Officer at the HZ through The Work Zone. This is a perfect side job for his studies. We asked him a couple of questions about his work. Please read along!

Since the beginning of March you started working as a communications officer at the HZ. How do you like this function?

I like it very much, I have a lot of freedom. Not only in terms of when I work but also a lot of creative freedom.

What kind of tasks do you perform?

Most of the work is website design, but also writing/maintaining the newsletter. It is mainly writing, but you do get the freedom to think of what you would like to see on the website.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

I often work a couple of hours in the evening. I said before that you get a lot of freedom when you work and you have to be able to handle that. With two evenings during the week I have made most of my hours, in this way I have the weekends off.

How did you find this side job?

It is very simple, The Work Zone often sends an email to the entire study with a vacancy which is a good fit for the study program. I only had to send an email back.

Can you combine your work with your studies?

Yes very easily. I work 8 hours per week and with working in the evenings I already make the required hours.

Are there things that you learn with this part-time job that will benefit you for your studies?

I like to write, I did that a lot during my internship. Now I can practice it even more. Furthermore, website design is also an aspect that often comes back in communication. So a lot of it comes back later as well.

You work for the HZ via The Work Zone. How did you experience this process?

Easy, normally when you apply for a job there is a considerable process behind it. Now all I had to do was send an email back and share some information. Most of it is done for you.

Would you recommend this part-time job as a communications officer to your fellow students?

Definitely! It is an education-oriented job where you are not only busy putting the study to practice, but it also looks great on your CV for later.
